Differences Between The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS or Mormons) and Evangelical Christianity
|
You may have seen the advertisements for the LDS church on television
or perhaps you have been visited by a Mormon missionary. The
advertisements show scenes of happy families and even offer to give you
a free Bible and Book of Mormon. The missionaries are always very
polite. You may think that there is no difference between the church of
Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and evangelical Christianity. This is
what the LDS church wants you to think because if you know that there are
major differences in beliefs, then you will not want to join their church. This
web page is designed to give you some of the beliefs that Mormons
believe to be true but that they are unlikely to tell you about, until after you
have joined the LDS church.
Galatians 1:8 "But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a
gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally
condemned!"
2 Corinthians 11:3-4 But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the
serpent's cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your
sincere and pure devotion to Christ. For if someone comes to you and
preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a
different spirit from the one you received, or a different gospel from the
one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough.
Mormon Beliefs:
A Different God:
Mormons believe in many Gods.
"Three separate personages-
Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, it is
evident from this standpoint alone
that a plurality of Gods exists. To
us, speaking in the proper finite
sense these three are the only
Gods we worship. But in addition
there is an infinite number of holy
personages, who have passed on
to exaltation and are thus gods."
McConkie, Bruce Mormon
Doctrine, Salt Lake City, Bookcraft
1987 page 576
God the Father Has a Body
"The Father has a body of flesh and
bones as tangible as man’s; the
Son also; but the Holy Ghost has
not a body of flesh and bones, but
is a personage of Spirit. Were it not
so, the Holy Ghost could not dwell in
us."

A Heavenly Mother:
"Latter-day Saints infer from
authoritative sources of scripture
and modern prophecy that there is
a Heavenly Mother as well as a
Heavenly Father."
"As early as 1839 the Prophet
Joseph Smith taught the concept of
an eternal mother as reported in
several accounts from that period."
Cannon, Elaine Encyclopedia of
Mormonism Vol. 2 New York:
Macmillan, 1992 Page 961
A Different Heaven:
Mormons believe that in order to go
to the highest heaven, you must be
married.
"Instructions by Joseph Smith the
Prophet, given at Ramus, Illinois,
May 16 and 17, 1843. HC 5: 392—
393.
1—4, Celestial marriage is
essential to exaltation in the highest
heaven;. . .
1 IN the celestial glory there are
three heavens or degrees;
2 And in order to obtain the highest,
a man must enter into this border of
the priesthood [meaning the new
and everlasting covenant of
marriage];
3 And if he does not, he cannot
obtain it.
4 He may enter into the other, but
that is the end of his kingdom; he
cannot have an increase•"

YOU can be a God:
Mormons believe that if you join
their church and follow all of their
teachings that you can become a
god yourself.
"Exaltation is eternal life, the kind of
life which God lives. Those who
obtain it gain an inheritance in the
highest of three heavens within the
celestial kingdom. (D&C 131: 1-4.)
. . .they have spirit children in the
resurrection, in relation to which
offspring they stand in the same
position that God our Father stands
to us. They inherit in due course the
fullness of the glory of the Father,
meaning that they have all power in
heaven and on earth."
McConkie, Bruce Mormon
Doctrine, Salt Lake City, Bookcraft
1987 page 257
"Then shall they be gods, because
they have no end; therefore shall
they be from everlasting to
everlasting, because they continue;
then shall they be above all,
because all things are subject unto
them. Then shall they be gods,
because they have all power, and
the angels are subject unto them."

The Bible Is Not the Final
Authority
The Prophet Joseph Smith
suggested certain broad
parameters for any LDS critical
study of the Bible; "We believe the
Bible is the word of God in so far is
it is translated correctly; we also
believe the Book of Mormon to be
the word of God" (A of F 8).
. . . critical scholarship, in addition
to recognizing the divine origins of
the Bible, must in its conclusions
take account of the teachings of the
BOOK OF MORMON and the other
revelations to modern prophets
included in the DOCTRINE AND
COVENANTS and the PEARL OF
GREAT PRICE, since for Latter-
day Saints such sources not only
take priority over revelations
recorded in antiquity (cf. D&C 5:10
http://scriptures.lds.org/dc/5) but
also aid in interpreting the biblical
text.

What the Bible Says:
There is One God Revealed in
Three Persons:
Isaiah 45:22. "Turn to me and be saved, all
you ends of the earth; for I am God, and there
is no other."
Deuteronomy 6:4. "Hear, O Israel: The LORD
our God, the LORD is one."
Deuteronomy 13:1-3 "If a prophet, or one
who foretells by dreams, appears among you
and announces to you a miraculous sign or
wonder, and if the sign or wonder of which he
has spoken takes place, and he says, "Let
us follow other gods" (gods you have not
known) "and let us worship them,"
you must not listen to the words of that
prophet or dreamer. The LORD your God is
testing you to find out whether you love him
with all your heart and with all your soul.
Mark 12:28-29 "Of all the commandments,
which is the most important?" "The most
important one," answered Jesus, "is this:
`Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is
one."
Isaiah 43:10-11 "You are my witnesses,"
declares the LORD, "and my servant whom I
have chosen, so that you may know and
believe me and understand that I am he.
Before me no god was formed, nor will there
be one after me. I, even I, am the LORD, and
apart from me there is no savior.
I Corinthians 8:5-7 "For even if there are
so-called gods, whether in heaven or on
earth (as indeed there are many "gods" and
many "lords"), yet for us there is but one
God, the Father, from whom all things came
and for whom we live; and there is but one
Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things
came and through whom we live. But not
everyone knows this. Some people are still
so accustomed to idols..."
Deut 18:18-20 I will raise up for them a
prophet like you from among their brothers; I
will put my words in his mouth, and he will
tell them everything I command him. If
anyone does not listen to my words that the
prophet speaks in my name, I myself will call
him to account. But a prophet who
presumes to speak in my name anything I
have not commanded him to say, or a
prophet who speaks in the name of other
gods, must be put to death."

The True Heaven
Matthew 22:29-30 "Jesus replied, "You are in
error because you do not know the Scriptures
or the power of God. At the resurrection
people will neither marry nor be given in
marriage; they will be like the angels in
heaven."
Satan Wants You to THINK You
Can Be a God:
Genesis 3:1-8
1. Now the serpent was more crafty than
any of the wild animals the LORD God had
made. He said to the woman, "Did God really
say, `You must not eat from any tree in the
garden'?"
2. The woman said to the serpent, "We may
eat fruit from the trees in the garden,
3. but God did say, `You must not eat fruit
from the tree that is in the middle of the
garden, and you must not touch it, or you will
die.'"
4. "You will not surely die," the serpent said
to the woman.
5. "For God knows that when you eat of it
your eyes will be opened, and you will be like
God, knowing good and evil."
6. When the woman saw that the fruit of the
tree was good for food and pleasing to the
eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom,
she took some and ate it. She also gave
some to her husband, who was with her, and
he ate it.
7. Then the eyes of both of them were
opened, and they realized they were naked;
so they sewed fig leaves together and made
coverings for themselves.
8. Then the man and his wife heard the
sound of the LORD God as he was walking
in the garden in the cool of the day, and they
hid from the LORD God among the trees of
the garden.
Isaiah 14
12. How you have fallen from heaven, O
morning star, son of the dawn! You have
been cast down to the earth, you who once
laid low the nations!
13. You said in your heart, "I will ascend to
heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars
of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of
assembly, on the utmost heights of the
sacred mountain.
14. I will ascend above the tops of the
clouds; I will make myself like the Most
High."
15. But you are brought down to the grave,
to the depths of the pit.
The Bible is the Final Authority:
2 Timothy 3:16.
"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful
for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training
in righteousness, so that the man of God
may be thoroughly equipped for every good
work.
Matthew 24:35 "Heaven and earth will pass
away, but my words will never pass away."
