| Tower Of Babel -Genesis 11 A monument has been found which shows that King of Ur Ur- Nammu (2044-2007 BC), built a great tower to worship the moon god Nannat. This made the gods angry. They destroyed the tower and confused all the languages. This supports the argument that the Biblical event took place. Abraham-Genesis 12-25 Laws from the time of Abraham show why he would be hesitant to throw Hagar out of the camp. Mari letters include the names of Abam-ram (Abraham) Jacobel, and Benjamites. Also supported is the account of a war of five kings against 4 kings as recorded in Genesis 14 The city of Dan (Laish) has been found. Genesis 14. Sodom and Gomorrah- Genesis 19 Sodom known in modern times as Bab edh-Dhra and Numeira or Gomorrah are located Southeast of the Dead Sea. Both were destroyed by fire that fell from above, possibly as the result of bitumen was hurled into the atmosphere by an earthquake and then ignited by lightening. These discoveries confirm the Biblical account. There are other theories which are also being investigated. Hitites- Genesis 23:10 Many believed that the bible was in error because no one could find the Hitites. Then in 1906 the Hitite library in Turkey was discovered. Joseph-Genesis The house and tomb of Joseph may have been discovered at Tell el-Dab’a in Egypt. The body was not there, it would have been removed during the Exodus. Jericho-Joshua 6 Joshua 2:1-7 Archeologists have found this city and have confirmed that the walls of the city fell outward forming a ramp that would make it easy for the Israelites to defeat the city. It is obvious that the walls did not fall from the attack but rather from some non- human force such as an earthquake or the power of God as the Bible says. There is also evidence that the city was burned which supports the Biblical account. Interestingly, archeologists have recently discovered that one section of the wall in the north remained standing when all the rest of the walls fell. This is where Rahab the prostitute’s house would have been. The 3 foot layer of ash which includes burned grain in jars supports the Biblical account that the siege was only 7 days, the harvest had been taken in, and the Israelites did not take the grain as commanded by God. Balaam-Numbers 22-24 A text was found in 1967 at Deir Alla, Jordan that mentions “Balaam son of Beor,” just like the Bible. Saul, David,Solomon Slings and Stones I Samuel 17:40,49 Benjamites who could sling at a hair and not miss. Judges 20:16 Use of slings in war by Israel- 2 Kings 2:35 Excavations of Saul’s fortress at Gibeah showed that slingshots were the most important weapons at the time. They were accurate and deadly at up to 440 yards (400 meters) which made them even more deadly than bows and arrows. Archeologist Avrham Birian of the Nelson Glueck School of Archeology discovered an inscription dated in the 9th century BC, 150 years after the time of David that mentioned the House of David. |
